An engine malfunctioned on a Northwest Airlines 747 carrying almost 200 people shortly after takeoff from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing, authorities said. No injuries were reported, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mort Edelstein said. Flight 3, bound for Tokyo, experienced trouble in one of its four engines minutes after takeoff, Edelstein said. He said the trouble probably was caused by an engine part coming loose. The FAA spokesman said it was not a life-threatening situation because a 747 is designed to fly with one engine if it has to. FAA and National Transportation Safety Board inspectors were sent to O’Hare to examine the engine.
