A welder’s acetylene torch apparently ignited a chemical residue on a railing and started a fire that injured 31 people at the Sonora Mining Co. processing plant, Tuolumne County Fire Warden Robert KempVanEe said. The welder tried to snuff the flames, but nearby plastic piping started burning and then ignited stored chemicals, KempVanEe said. Smoke sent many people to the hospital with symptoms including breathing problems and eye inflammations.
