Democrats to Snub Arizona Over King Day

WASHINGTON — Democratic Party Chairman Paul G. Kirk Jr., protesting Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham’s cancellation of the state’s observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, announced Tuesday that he is shifting a meeting of the party’s finance council from Arizona to California.
The winter meeting of the finance council was scheduled for Feb. 20-22, in Tucson. Kirk announced that it now will be in Newport Beach instead.
“Like the great American whose memory we honor, the Democratic Party is taking a stand against injustice,” Kirk said.
