New Zealand to Help Kookaburra, Will Not Assist Stars & Stripes
New Zealand syndicate head Michael Fay announced today that the Kiwis will not help fellow challenger Stars & Stripes prepare for the America’s Cup finals and will assist Kookaburra only to the extent of offering their KZ7 as a trial boat, without providing any technical information.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Fay said.
He denied that the “glassgate” controversy started by Stars & Stripes three months ago was a factor, although he had received “a large number” of calls and messages from supporters urging him not to help the Americans.
Although there was precedent for challengers helping their survivors, Fay said: “We are under no obligation.”
Stars & Stripes syndicate president Malin Burnham said he was “disappointed.”
