In a bid to prevent Europe’s top thoroughbreds from going overseas to seek prize money in the United States and Japan, race horse breeders have organized Britain’s richest race day, offering about $945,000 in purses on a five-race card next Sept. 26.

Sir John Astor, chairman of the newly formed Supporters of British Horseracing, said the event will be known as the Festival of British Racing.

The feature race on the card will be the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, a one-mile race for 3-year-olds and older, which will have total prize money of $360,000.
