At least 30 people were injured as mounted police battled 2,000 protesters marking the anniversary of press tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s decision to print his British newspapers outside central London. Most of the injured were knocked down by cavalry charges by baton-wielding police who came under a hail of rocks, bricks and firebombs from demonstrators outside Murdoch’s printing plant in the Wapping area of east London. Murdoch made history last year when he moved the publication of his British papers from Fleet Street, traditional home of British newspapers, to the new high-technology plant. He fired 5,500 workers who refused to move to the new site and operate computerized presses.
