A UC Berkeley biology professor said he has permission from the university’s Committee for Protection of Animal Subjects to shoot 60 Sierra chickadees with a shotgun so he can study their feeding habits. Michael Morrison said he plans to shoot the small birds in February or March and slice them open to see what they eat. Eric Miles, coordinator for Action for Animals, a Berkeley group seeking to stop the research, called the use of a shotgun “immoral.”
