Michael Franklin, 63, will step down as national executive director of the Directors Guild of America at the end of the year, the union announced late Friday. Replacing him in January, 1988, will be Glenn Gumpel, a former guild official and currently a vice president at MCA Inc. Franklin has headed the directors guild since 1978 and the Writers Guild of America for 20 years before that.
