Winnie Mandela, wife of jailed South African black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela, was held by police for questioning but later released, her lawyer said. A police spokesman said Mandela had not been arrested. Lawyer Ismail Ayob said that police had searched Mandela’s home in the black township of Soweto for more than two hours before taking her to Soweto’s main police station. They returned to the home to collect her daughter, Zinzi, and a filing cabinet, he said. Police spent several hours going through the cabinet’s contents with Winnie Mandela before releasing both women and returning the cabinet. The lawyer said he was not able to learn the reason for the detention.
