Dan Henning, former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, was hired as an assistant offensive coach by the Washington Redskins, the team he helped to the 1983 Super Bowl.

Henning was Washington’s offensive coordinator in 1981-82 and also in 1982-83, the season in which the Redskins defeated Miami in Super Bowl XVII. Henning then became head coach of the Falcons, where he had seasons of 7-9, 4-12, 4-12 and 7-8-1 before he was fired Dec. 22, the day after the season ended.

The Falcons began the season 4-0 and were 5-1 before going 2-7 in their last nine games and failing to make the playoffs. After he was fired, Henning turned down the job of offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was rumored to have considered a coaching job with the New York Giants.
