Share

Somebody’s losing streak will end when San Diego State plays United States International University tonight at 7:30 in the Sports Arena.

SDSU (2-16) has tied a single-season school record by losing 10 straight.

USIU (6-11) has lost its last nine games against SDSU.

The Aztecs have not won since they defeated Manhattan, 77-69, on Dec. 27. They are coming off a 76-67 loss to Hawaii, which had lost 11 straight.

“We feel all games are winnable,” SDSU Coach Smokey Gaines said. “We just need to get a win to get our confidence.”

USIU has lost four of its last five games, the victory coming against Point Loma Nazarene, 107-94, on Jan. 20. The Gulls have not beaten SDSU since 1965-66.

“San Diego State would have beaten us by 30 points five or six years ago, despite the down year it is having,” USIU Coach Gary Zarecky said. “I think we’ll be able to compete with them now.”

Freshman guard Tony Ross leads SDSU with a 16.9 scoring average. Senior guard Joe Yezbak leads USIU with a 22.5 scoring average.

Anthony Watson of SDSU scored a school-record 54 points last season as the Aztecs defeated USIU, 138-93.
