Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) felt like he was watching “Back to the Future” when he visited the Glendale set last week of HBO’s “. . . And Nothing But the Truth: The Chicago Conspiracy Trial.”

Claimed the one-time Vietnam War activist: “All the actors bore an eerie resemblance to the original defendants. They had adopted our mannerisms and even the attitude that we didn’t get along or know each other. I felt like I was granted the right to return to my past.”

The 90-minute show is based on the 22,000-page transcript of the controversial six-month 1969 trial. Interviews with the original defendants will be intercut.

Actor Brian Benben is cast as Hayden. Among other castings: Michael Lembeck as Abbie Hoffman, Carl Lumbly as Bobby Seale, Peter Boyle as Dave Dellinger, Barry Miller as Jerry Rubin, Robert Carradine as Rennie Davis, Robert Fieldsteel as Lee Weiner, David Kagen as John Froins, Robert Loggia as defense attorney William Kunstler, Elliott Gould as attorney Leonard Weinglass and David Opatoshu as Judge Julius Hoffman. Jeremy Kagan is the writer/director.

Hayden said that the production won’t have any effect on his political career but believes it’s likely to lead the way for films and books examining the ‘60s, including his own book, “The Class of ‘68” (to be published next year), “a look into the ‘60s in general and that particular watershed year of our history.”

Said Hayden: “I’ve always wanted to see the definitive ‘60s movie. I’ve been bugging my wife (Jane Fonda) to make one. She keeps reminding me that even though those were exciting, volatile years, you still need an interesting story to wrap around them for a film to work.”
