WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Cal Lutheran Blown Out, 83-65

After leading by nine points at halftime, Fresno Pacific opened the second half with a 10-0 run and coasted to its first Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday night, defeating Cal Lutheran, 83-65, at Fresno.

Fresno (8-14, 1-5) was led by center John Berwick, who scored 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Fresno shot 66% and played an aggressive man-to-man defense to limit Cal Lutheran (8-14, 2-4) to 37% shooting.

Cal Lutheran was led by Dave Jacques’ 14 points. Steve deLaveaga and Michael Demeter each added 13 for Cal Lutheran.

James Faulk’s 10 rebounds helped Cal Lutheran outrebound Fresno, 33-29, which includes a 17-7 advantage on the offensive boards. Fresno made 23 of 30 free throws. Cal Lutheran was 5 of 8.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 77, Cuesta 61--Tom Neumayr scored 18 points and Dave Inemer added 16 for Moorpark (13-10, 3-5) in the Western State Conference game. Cuesta is 2-6 in the conference.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Southern California College 67, The Master’s 58--Michelle Carter of The Master’s scored a game-high 26 points but received little offensive support from her teammates in the NAIA District III game at The Master’s.

Carter, a junior forward who averages 12 points per game, made 12 of 30 shots and 2 of 5 free throws and also grabbed eight rebounds. None of her teammates, however, scored in double figures. Kelli Pattison and Carmen Javaux scored six points each for The Master’s (5-14, 2-10 in NAIA District III play).

Southern Cal (8-15, 4-6) had a more balanced scoring attack. Delores Essinger scored 21 points, Lisa Terry had 18 and Connie Brazell 11.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bell-Jeff 49, Pater Noster 29--Nick Sanderson scored 14 points and Greg Dunn had 12 and a team-high 6 rebounds to lead Bell-Jeff to the Santa Fe League win at home.

Bell-Jeff (11-7, 6-4), winner of six of its last eight, jumped out to 15-4 lead in the first quarter and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Bell-Jeff, which is in fourth place, shot 54% against a Pater Noster zone.

Chaminade 70, St. Genevieve 50--Chaminade’s Scott Stuber, a 6-5 senior forward, had a triple-double--27 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists--in the Santa Fe League game. Chaminade played without center Kevin Black, who sprained his right ankle in practice on Friday.

Jeff Denton contributed 15 points and 6 rebounds for Chaminade (13-6, 9-1), which remained tied for the league lead with Harvard. Ruben Aguirre scored 17 for St. Genevieve.

Harvard 80, La Salle 60--Mike Lowe scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, both game highs, as Harvard won its fourth straight Santa Fe League game. Steve Green and Andy Bell added 14 and 12 points for Harvard (12-4, 9-1). Greg Rolf scored 12 points for La Salle (0-16, 0-10).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

La Reina 65, Bishop Diego 41--Christina Ornalaz had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead La Reina to the Tri-Valley League win at Moorpark High. La Reina (6-8, 6-4) also was led by Michelle Lundby, who scored 13, and Louella Angeles, who had 4 steals and 7 assists.
