Garden Grove : Fire Destroys Home, Displacing 6 People

A fire that destroyed a home and displaced a family of five and a boarder Saturday night was blamed on a portable heater, authorities said Sunday.

Firefighters, who were summoned about 10:40 p.m. Saturday, found the home in the 11800 block of Robert Lane in flames when they arrived, Garden Grove Battalion Chief Bernard Heimos said.

Heimos said it took 15 firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, and he estimated damage at $80,000.

Karen and Alexander Anderson and their three children, who were home when the fire broke out, along with an unidentified boarder, escaped without serious injury, Heimos said. One of the children, 2-year-old Daniel, was treated by paramedics for singed hair but did not require hospitalization.

Heimos said investigators believe the fire was caused by a portable heater left in an enclosed patio area of the house. He said combustible material may have ignited after being left too close to the heater.

American Red Cross spokeswoman Sylvia Fanton said the organization has provided a hotel room and other assistance for the Anderson family, but the boarder was staying with relatives.
