Maj. Gen. Dan Shomron, who led Israel’s 1976 airborne raid to free hijacked passengers from Entebbe airport in Uganda, was appointed Israel’s new military chief of staff. The appointment, effective April 19, is expected to cause a shake-up in the Israeli army’s senior command. Shomron, 50, succeeds Lt. Gen. Moshe Levy, who held the job for four years and will retire. A chief of staff usually serves for four years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and then is expected to retire. Shomron’s appointment was approved unanimously by the Cabinet.
