“The Making of Dancing on the Ceiling.” Karl-Lorimar. $14.95. Like most of those behind-the-scenes film promos used as filler on cable channels, this anatomy of a Lionel Richie rock video is so thick with self-congratulation that the interesting aspects don’t come through. Stanley Donen, who directed Richie’s little gravity-defying romp, also handled Fred Astaire’s similar dance in 1951’s “Royal Wedding,” and while there’s talk about the two, this 35-minute video never shows the Astaire prototype. There’s also lots of chatter about choreography and costumes, and Richie himself is his usual amiable and bland self. The logistics are interesting, but the jumpy editing never lets you get a clear, full picture of exactly what’s going on. Information: (714) 474-0355.
