Share

Three burglary suspects were arrested Monday after two police officers fired at a car driven by one of them, authorities said.

Police Lt. Rod Gillman identified the three suspects as Glenn C. Waters, 30, and Dewayne Powe, 31, both of Santa Ana, and Eugene Franklin, 30, of Placentia. Gillman said that no one was injured in the gunfire.

According to Gillman, two officers patrolling the 17000 block of Magnolia Street at about 12:15 a.m. Monday heard the sound of glass breaking, then spotted two men carrying merchandise from a Radio Shack store while a third man waited in a car parked outside.

Gillman said that Sgt. Keith Levin ordered the men to halt but that after one of them jumped into the car, the driver allegedly sped toward the officers’ patrol car. Gillman said Officer Al Dollar drove the police cruiser into the path of the suspects’ car, but it swerved out of the way.

At that point, Gillman said both officers fired several rounds at the suspects’ vehicle. A brief chase ended when the suspects’ car went out of control and hit a curb at the intersection of Tahoma Street and Warner Avenue.

Gillman said Waters, who was arrested near the scene of the accident, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, burglary and evading arrest.

He said Franklin was arrested at the intersection where the car crashed, and Powe was taken into custody at the Radio Shack. Both Powe and Franklin were booked on suspicion of burglary and bail was set at $25,000, Gillman said. Bail for Waters was not immediately known. All three were being held in County Jail.
