Norwalk : Beer Sales Permit Denied

Share

The Norwalk City Council has voted 4-to-1 to deny a conditional-use permit that would have allowed the sale of beer and wine at a Texaco self-serve gasoline station.

City officials expressed concern because they did not feel there was a need for another liquor outlet in the vicinity of the station at 10916 Rosecrans Ave. A survey by city staff members reported that liquor is sold at six other outlets within 800 feet of the site.

In addition, the county Sheriff’s Department found that there were a substantial number of cases involving violation of liquor laws in the surrounding area.

The council concurred with the Planning Commission’s recommendation to deny, even though Doug Elston, a Texaco spokesman, indicated that the company would be willing to sell the beer and wine warm and agree to a six-month trial period. Mayor Robert White was the only council member voting for the proposal.
