Suspicion about the “very nervous” behavior of a driver and his passengers led police early Thursday to stop the car, which turned out to have been stolen from the El Cajon Police Department in San Diego County.

Huntington Beach police said the unmarked car had been used by El Cajon officers for undercover drug operations.

The driver of the car, identified as 18-year-old David Carpenter of El Cajon, was arrested on suspicion of auto theft and was booked into Huntington Beach Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail. His youthful passengers in the car were not arrested.

Police said the car was spotted headed south on Beach Boulevard “with several subjects inside.” A police spokesman added, “Officers noted that the subjects were apparently very nervous.”

Police ran a check on the car’s license tag, found it had been stolen from the El Cajon Police Department, then stopped the vehicle and made the arrest.
