Pacific 10 Roundup : Ortiz Helps Oregon State Stay in First Place
Senior center Jose Ortiz scored 24 points, 14 in the first half, and pulled down 15 rebounds Thursday night as Oregon State won its fifth straight game and stayed atop the Pacific 10 Conference standings with an 86-71 victory over Arizona State at Tempe, Ariz.
The Beavers are 16-4 overall and 9-3 in the Pac-10.
Mark Becker and Tarre Isiah had 14 points each for the Sun Devils, now 6-13 and 2-9. Steve Beck, who entered the game as Arizona State’s leading scorer with a 20.3 average, was held to just two points.
Washington 79, Washington State 65--Chris Welp scored 22 points and set a school record in leading the Huskies past the Cougars at Seattle.
Welp, a 7-foot senior, became the Huskies’ career scoring leader by surpassing Bob Houbregs’ mark of 1,774 points set from 1951-53. Welp’s career total is now 1,794 points.
Washington is 13-9 overall and 7-4 in the conference.
Arizona 68, Oregon 53--Tom Tolbert scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Arizona at Tucson. The Wildcats are 13-7 and 8-3.
