LATIN AMERICAN FILM SERIES AT SDSU STARTS THIS MONTH

The third annual Latin American film series, Ventana Latina (Latin Window), will feature a film every other Monday in February, March and April. The free series will be held at 7:30 p.m. at San Diego State University’s Hepner Hall.

Among the six films to be screened is the Academy Award-winning movie “The Official Story” (March 9). This movie portrays the aftermath of the war perpetrated by the Argentine military dictatorship. It is the most recently released film in the series.

“Unfortunately, we can’t afford to get the Latin films that are playing now and have to stick more to the classics,” said Kirsten Mulvey, administrative coordinator for the Center for Latin American Studies, sponsor of the event. “Because we’re an educational program, we’re not trying to make a profit. But by next year we should be able to afford the newer films.

“The goal of the series is to demonstrate how Latin America feels about itself. The films tend to be political and soulful. Because most of our impressions of Latin America tend to be stereotypical, we try to choose a variety of films to get a broad subject matter. We get a lot of creative documentary films.”

Other films in the series are “The Other Francisco” (Monday), “Jackal of Nahueltoro” (Feb. 23), “Chuquiago” (March 23), “Portrait of Teresa” (April 6) and “Pixote” (April 20).
