An Orthodox Jewish firefighter has filed a $5-million discrimination claim gainst the city of Glendale, alleging that his superiors made it difficult for him to wear his yarmulke on duty and to take Saturdays off to observe the Sabbath. Michael Pomeranz, on the Glendale force for four years, alleges that co-workers and managers mocked his religious beliefs and aimed racist remarks at him. City officials deny his allegations, saying that they transferred Pomeranz last October to a fire inspector’s position in which he could take Saturdays off and always wear his yarmulke.
