Former Buffalo Bill placekicker John Leypoldt, the team’s second-leading all-time scorer, died after apparently suffering a heart attack at Cheektowago, N.Y.
Susan Pajerski, nursing supervisor at St. Joseph’s Intercommunity Hospital in this Buffalo suburb, said Leypoldt, 40, entered the hospital’s emergency room at 12:20 p.m. complaining of chest pains.
“Shortly thereafter, he had a cardiac arrest, it appears,” and died at about 1 p.m., she said.
Leypoldt had no collegiate playing experience and was working for a lighting company when he won a tryout with the Bills in 1971.
From 1971 to 1976, Leypoldt kicked 74 field goals and 147 extra points--both team records--for the Bills. His 369 points made him the team’s second-leading scorer behind O.J. Simpson and his 420 points.
