Amax Inc. of Greenwich, Conn., reported preliminary unaudited net profit for 1986 after posting a loss in 1985. During the year the company generated more than $400 million in cash from operations, including asset sales of $335 million, but before a cash payment of $335 million for its Alumax acquisition.
