Four of 10 California Lottery players are unemployed and three in 10 come from households with less than $20,000 annual income, according to the lottery’s first demographic survey. Results of the canvass, released in Sacramento, indicate that lotto is played most often by Asians and blacks. Three of 10 blacks and Asians have played lotto, the survey indicated, compared to 25% of whites and other ethnic groups. Overall, however, the survey discovered that lottery players match the demographic profile of the general adult population, are more likely to be employed, and have median household incomes slightly higher, at $27,210, than the $26,570 median household income for the statewide population.
