Three new inductees into UC Irvine’s Hall of Fame--Jeff Malinoff, Jeffrey McDermaid and Ralph Serna--will be honored during halftime of Saturday night’s basketball game against Cal State Fullerton in the Bren Center.

Malinoff, a baseball All-American in 1972-74, was the most valuable player of the NCAA Division II College World Series in 1974, when the Anteaters won their second straight national title.

He is UCI’s career leader in home runs (16), triples (17), doubles (49) and RBIs (189), and set single-season records for RBIs (65) and triples (10). Malinoff is the Northwest scouting supervisor for the Seattle Mariners.

McDermaid, an All-American in sailing in 1972, ’74 and ‘75, won the Pacific Coast Championships in the “A” division in 1975 and was a member of the international team that sailed against the British on two occasions.

He also won the PCC “A” division championship and the Pacific Coast Single-handed Championship in 1974 and placed fifth in the U.S. Laser Nationals. McDermaid, a dentist in Whittier, was “B” division skipper for UCI’s national championship team in 1972.

Serna was a two-time All-American in cross-country, winning the NCAA Division II title in 1975 and ’76. He was a member of the USA Junior National team in 1976 for cross-country and track.

Serna was the PCAA cross-country and 10,000-meter track champion in 1977. He has competed in marathons worldwide, placing 51st in the 1984 New York City Marathon and 35th in the 1983 Boston Marathon. He manages a running store in Fountain Valley.

Servite High School will dedicate its refurbished baseball field to former Angel executive Arthur E. (Red) Patterson in a 9:30 a.m. ceremony on Feb. 28.

Former Angel infielder Ron Jackson will emcee the event, and Patterson will throw out the first pitch for an exhibition game between the Friars and Servite alumni.

Patterson, 78, was one of baseball’s most innovative and successful publicists and marketing executives. He was hired by Angel owner Gene Autry in 1975 and a short time later was named assistant to the owner. He also served on the Angels’ board of directors before resigning in April, 1985.

A former sportswriter with the New York Herald Tribune, Patterson spent 28 years as a publicist with the Yankees and Dodgers and is credited with introducing old-timers’ days and yearbooks. He also was the first to apply a tape measure to one of Mickey Mantle’s home runs.

Lee Canalito, an unbeaten heavyweight from Houston, has been added to the Feb. 23 fight card at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. Canalito (14-0) will meet Ron Smith of Portland, Ore., in the eight-round semi-main event.

Featured in the 10-round main event will be Greg Puente of El Monte and Ramon Marchena of Westminster. Puente (9-1-4) is the current California super featherweight champion.

Marchena (16-3) has defeated Brazil’s Francisco De La Cruz, the World Boxing Council’s No. 1 super-featherweight contender.

Tickets, priced at $27.50, $22.50 and $17.50, are on sale at Megan’s in the Heritage Shopping Plaza at Irvine and all Ticketmaster locations in May Company stores.
