A 16-year-old Irvine youth was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving after he lost control of his car, which rolled down an embankment and overturned Thursday night. The driver said he had swerved to avoid an animal crossing the road.

The driver, whose name was not released because of his age, and two male passengers suffered minor injuries in the accident, which occurred on the Corona del Mar Freeway about 9:45 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Paul Caldwell said.

The car was northbound on the freeway, west of MacArthur Boulevard, when the driver swerved to avoid striking an animal, according to Caldwell. The vehicle went out of control, hit a curb and then went down an embankment into the southbound lanes, rolled over and came to a rest on its roof in the acceleration lane of the Jamboree Road on-ramp, he said.

The driver was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of his injuries. His two passengers, William T. Black, 17, of Riverside, and Tim J. O’Keith, 17, of Irvine, were taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, Caldwell said.
