Ivan Lendl, the top-ranked men’s tennis player, said he wouldn’t play for Czechoslovakia in the Olympics if professionals are allowed to participate.

The executive board of the International Olympic Committee had endorsed open tennis competition at the 1988 Seoul Games. If the IOC agrees with the decision, pros would be permitted to play, although they wouldn’t receive prize money.

“I think it’s good that tennis will be open for the professionals,” Lendl said after beating Andres Gomez, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in an exhibition match to raise funds for the Washington Tennis Center.
