‘Going After the Big Cats’

Your editorial is to be commended for its courage, insight, and timeliness. I believe that a majority of California residents support your position.

As a longtime member of the National Rifle Assn. and an active participant in outdoor sports, I have long supported the intelligent, careful management of California’s resources. But the Fish and Game Department’s recommendation to allow a reopened hunting season for cougars is clearly ill advised, both from a standpoint of wildlife management and common sense about a small gene pool of predators that depend on enormously long and complicated chains of food supply.
