Several thousand college newspapers were stolen from bins at San Diego State University on Tuesday, a day after women protesting a Playboy advertisement in the paper sealed about 7,000 papers shut with stickers.
According to Daily Aztec newspaper editor R. Andrew Rathbone, the papers disappeared before early classes Tuesday morning. He estimated that as many as half of the 15,000 papers, which are distributed free, were stolen before most students arrived on campus.
Rathbone said no one had claimed responsibility for the theft. “We have called around, but mum is the word,” he said.
On Monday, women opposed to sex-oriented advertising sealed papers with stickers reading “SDSU Women Say No to Playboy” and “Playboy and This Aztec Insult Women.” The women were protesting an ad placed in the newspaper by Playboy magazine that seeks female students interested in posing for the magazine.
Campus public safety personnel will watch newspaper drop boxes today, Rathbone said.
