Local News in Brief : Driver in Wrong-Way Collision Arrested

A Pasadena man who drove his van in the wrong direction early Monday on the Foothill Freeway and collided with another van has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, identified Tuesday as Kirk Forrest, 19, was driving west in the eastbound lane of the freeway near Sunland Boulevard and Wentworth Street in Los Angeles when he collided head-on with a Department of Water and Power van driven by Alex Calzada of Sylmar, who was traveling east at 50 m.p.h., CHP Officer Steve Strull said.

According to authorities, both men were airlifted by the Los Angeles Fire Department to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills after the 3:55 a.m. collision. Calzada, 51, who suffered severe chest and abdominal injuries and a broken pelvis and upper left leg, was listed Tuesday in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Forrest was being treated for a skull fracture and a crushed left leg, Strull said. Forrest was also listed in stable condition, the hospital spokeswoman said.
