The minister who distributed condoms to parishioners during a sermon about AIDS earlier this month has a police record and was convicted of parading naked in front of Brownies, it was reported today.

The Rev. Carl Thitchener, 54, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Amherst, pleaded guilty in 1957 to second-degree assault and was found guilty of disorderly conduct in a 1982 streaking incident involving a Brownie troop, the Buffalo News reported today.

“I have decided not to say anything about this,” Thitchener told the newspaper.

The newspaper also said Thitchener had been placed on probation for five years after a 1984 conviction for drunk driving. Court records also show a 1958 conviction for public exposure and a drunk driving conviction in 1975.

The church board of trustees met Tuesday night and unanimously expressed “its continuing confidence in the minister.”
