Retired Judge Elected President of Trinidad
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad —
Noor Mohammed Hassalani, a retired appeals court judge, has been elected president of Trinidad and Tobago by Parliament.
Hassalani, who will be sworn in March 19, replaces Ellis E.I. Clarke, who has held the largely ceremonial post since 1976.
The new president, chosen Monday night, is the first Indian to be elected head of state in the former British colony.
