Evert Lloyd Returns, Wins
Chris Evert Lloyd coasted to a 6-4, 6-2 second-round victory over Elna Reinach of South Africa Tuesday night to gain the round of 16 in the $250,000 Virginia Slims of Florida women’s tennis tournament.
Evert Lloyd, playing her first tournament match since losing in the U.S. Open semifinals to Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia last September, broke Reinach’s service in the seventh game of a tight first set.
She then lost her service twice in the second set, in the second and sixth games, but never appeared in danger of losing to the 18-year-old who holds a No. 48 world ranking.
“I’m just happy I won and I hope I can concentrate better in my next match,” said Evert Lloyd, ranked second in the world.
“I was nervous,” added Evert Lloyd, who spent five months healing a knee injury. “It was anticipation, waiting. But after five months being away you can expect that. After I got through the first set I told myself, ‘You’re fine.’ ”
