Oscar-winning Greek composer Vangelis was cleared of plagiarism charges by Britain’s High Court in London Wednesday. EMI Music and fellow-Greek musician Stavros Logarides had sued Vangelis--whose real name is Evangelos Papathanasiou--and his publishers for breach of copyright, saying he had copied a Logarides tune for his “Chariots of Fire” theme from the film of the same name. EMI was ordered to pay the costs of the action after the judge said that although it was possible Vangelis had heard Logarides’ tune, it could not be proved that he had copied or used it.
