San Pedro : Air Force Agreement OKd
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a hard-fought compromise between the city and the Air Force over military housing at White Point and Martin J. Bogdanovich parks.
The agreement, which took nearly three years to negotiate, is expected to be signed by Mayor Tom Bradley this week. It would preserve most of White Point park for a proposed oceanfront state park, while allowing the Air Force to build 170 homes on the entire 22-acre Bogdanovich park and about 13 acres of White Point park.
Both parks once belonged to the federal government, but were declared surplus in the 1970s and deeded to the city. The deeds allow the federal government to reclaim the property, however, for “national defense purposes.” The Air Force asserts that its housing needs for officers at the El Segundo Space Station fall within the “national defense” provision.
Los Angeles Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores, who represents San Pedro, has pledged to relocate a soccer field at Bogdanovich park and to name another recreational facility in San Pedro after Bogdanovich, who founded Star-Kist Foods.
