Unidentified Man Dies in Motel Fire
An unidentified man died Friday night when a fire gutted a second-story room of an Escondido motel, according to police.
The cause of the fire, which occured at about 5:45 p.m. at the California Motel, in the 400 block of West Washington Avenue, is under investigation, Escondido police dispatcher Paul Bebo said.
A man in his late 50s died in the blaze, according to Bebo. He said it was unknown if he was the registered occupant of the room.
The two-story motel was evacuated, but no other injuries were reported.
Damage was contained to the one room and water leakage to the rooms below it, Bebo said.
