Nunn Leaves Door Open for Nomination in 1988

ATLANTA — Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) said Friday night he would not form a presidential exploratory committee but left open the possibility he would accept the Democratic nomination in 1988.
“I know that if I tried to take on a presidential race in the next six months and also to perform my duties, I would wind up doing neither well,” Nunn told 3,000 Democratic Party members at the annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner. “For these reasons, I’m not tossing my hat in the ring nor am I forming an exploratory committee.”
Nunn’s announcement follows New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo’s decision Thursday not to seek the Democratic nomination.
