Service Set for David Hayward, Former Redondo Beach Mayor

A memorial service will be held today for former Redondo Beach Mayor David K. Hayward, who died last week.

Hayward, 57, died of cancer Wednesday at South Bay Hospital. He was mayor from 1977 to 1981 and the City Council representative from District 4 from 1961 to 1973.

“He was a very good politician and he worked very hard for Redondo. . . . He didn’t like to take no for an answer,” said Councilman Archie Snow, who now represents District 4.

Hayward lost a reelection bid to the current mayor, Barbara Doerr, in the 1981 runoff election.

Snow said last week that Hayward worked aggressively to get projects accomplished and was instrumental in the installation of sidewalks, gutters and storm drains in District 4.

Hayward also played a significant role in the development of King Harbor, Snow added.

He said the renaming of the Artesia Community Building at 2000 Artesia Blvd. to the David K. Hayward Community Building at last week’s council meeting is “a fitting memorial to him.”

Snow said Hayward worked hard to get the community building built. “After 1981, we never took a council action to say, ‘Thank you’ to David Hayward, and I think we were very remiss in not doing that,” Snow said.

The community building is used by about 40 nonprofit organizations for meetings and counseling services.

Hayward is survived by his wife, Margaret, and two children, Cheryl Traylor and Daniel.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Community Baptist Church in Manhattan Beach.
