Emmian Leaps 27-10 for European Record

Robert Emmian of the Soviet Union set a European record of 27 feet 10 inches in the long jump Saturday as East Bloc athletes won five of six titles on the first day of the European Indoor Track Championships at Lievin, France.

Emmian broke his own record of 27-4 1/2. The world indoor record is 28-10, held by Carl Lewis of the United States.

Poland’s Marian Woronin twice lowered his European 60-meter record and won the final in a time of 6.51 seconds. In the semifinals, the 30-year-old Polish veteran had clocked 6.52.

Sweden’s Patrik Sjoberg won the high jump at 7-9 3/4, and East Germany’s Ulf Timmermann set a national record of 72-9 3/4 to win the shotput.

In the high jump, three men cleared 7-8 3/4 on their first attempt, a feat unequaled in the event. Carlo Thranhardt of West Germany was second, and Gennady Avdeyenko of the Soviet Union was third at that height.
