“Paramount Comedy Theater, Volume I: Well Developed.” Paramount. $29.95. The first entry in a proposed series featuring “up-and-coming” comedians is a good idea poorly executed. As someone who frequents Los Angeles-area comedy clubs, I can’t believe Paramount’s scouts have been working overtime. While the four comics on this Howie Mandel-hosted tape--Bruce Mahler, Judy Carter, Philip Wellford and Bob Saget--have their moments, none are consistently funny. Many of the jokes come via gimmicks (one comic’s a great juggler, another a competent magician). Let’s hope Volume II turns up some of the talented stand-ups who are far more deserving of a chance. Packaging rates material as “adult oriented,” and it is. Information: (213) 468-5000.
