AMR said it is “not interested” in Pan Am.

AMR, which owns American Airlines, had been reported to be involved in talks aimed at a possible acquisition of troubled Pan American World Airways. AMR has a marketing agreement with Pan American that gives it the right of first refusal in any takeover of Pan Am. An American spokesman said the company was making the announcement at this time because Chairman Robert Crandall was about to conduct annual employee conferences and wanted to “clear the air.” Meanwhile, Pan Am Chairman C. Edward Acker warned in a letter to employees that the airline might sell its shuttle operation in the Northeast.
