Members of Congress and representatives from Germany and American Jewish groups joined on Capitol Hill Monday to honor Germans of the White Rose Movement who openly resisted the Nazis during World War II.

The ceremony, held to launch the creation of the White Rose Foundation, came on the anniversary of the deaths of Hans and Sophie Scholl, two of the movement’s leaders who were executed by the Nazis for distributing leaflets calling on the German people to resist Adolf Hitler.

The foundation, a branch of the American Jewish Congress, honors the memory of the German students who risked their own lives by stating their moral opposition to the Nazi death camps and aims at bridging the political and psychological gap between West Germans and the American Jewish community.
