The way has been cleared for a group of the top men’s tennis players, including No. 1-ranked Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, to use the Scottish Open tournament as a grass-court tuneup for Wimbledon, officials said.

Final approval was given by the Edinburgh District Council, which owns the tennis club where the June tournament takes place, Douglas Lynd, secretary of the Scottish Lawn Tennis Assn., said.

The British LTA, which runs the Queens Club tournament in London at the same time as the Scottish competition, also has given its blessing after being assured that the Edinburgh event was a tournament and not an exhibition, Lynd said.

Those joining Lendl among the invitees are expected to include Mats Wilander of Sweden, Yannick Noah of France and Andres Gomez of Ecuador.
