Norwalk : Literacy Program to Debut
A computer software program designed to combat illiteracy will be introduced to local and state educators at John Glenn High School today.
Besides being offered to district high school students during school hours, the 20-week program will be made available to adults who read at a fifth-grade level or below through the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District’s adult school, said Patricia Bright, a district spokeswoman.
“We want to showcase . . . the good side of what’s happening in education,” said Bright, noting that Norwalk-La Mirada will be the only school district on the West Coast to implement the program, which uses cartoon characters to teach alphabet principles and phonetics. It was developed by educator John Henry Martin for IBM.
Bright said adults from Downey, Artesia, Norwalk, Cerritos, La Mirada, Bellflower and Whittier can participate in the program, which will be available after school and on weekends.
The program will be introduced at a 10:30 a.m. reception attended by educators from surrounding school districts and state officials.
