A 13-year-old Santee girl was fatally injured Wednesday when she was run over by a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department van.
Sheriff’s deputies said Rochelle Gregson was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she died about 6 p.m.
Traffic investigator Ray Root reported that the Gregson girl and some neighborhood friends were playing with snow that had been brought back from the mountains about 3:15 p.m. when she attempted to run across Park Avenue between Edgemoor Drive and 4th Street.
A van carrying prisoners from the County Jail at Las Colinas hit the girl, running over her abdomen and hips, deputies reported.
The sheriff’s Santee traffic division is investigating the accident.
