Austrian Power: Contaminated Wine Going Up in Smoke
An Austrian electric power plant will start burning wine adulterated in a 1985 scandal to produce electricity, the plant operators said Thursday.
The Oesterreichischen Draukraftwerke in Carinthia said that its technicians have developed a way of burning 30 million liters of contaminated wine, stored throughout Austria after being seized in the scandal.
The wine will be mixed with coal to produce carbon dioxide, steam and sugar, a company statement said.
More than 40 wine dealers and producers were arrested in connection with the scandal for allegedly adding an anti-freeze agent, diethylene-glycol, to low-quality wines to sweeten them for sale as high-quality wines. Diethylene-glycol can cause liver and brain damage.
