Pacific 10 Roundup : Stanford Surprises Arizona on a Shot by Wright, 75-73
Howard Wright hit a 15-foot jumper with one second left as Stanford came back from a 14-point deficit to upset Arizona, 75-73, in a Pacific 10 basketball game Thursday night at Stanford.
Arizona’s Craig McMillan had tied the game with two free throws with 29 seconds remaining.
Stanford’s Novian Whitsitt dribbled downcourt and made an off-balance pass to the unguarded Wright, a 6-8 center who rarely shoots from outside.
Arizona (17-10 overall, 12-5 in the Pac-10) took a 41-29 halftime lead before Stanford (14-12, 8-9) began its comeback. Led by forward Eric Reveno and Whitsitt, who scored 22 of the Cardinal’s next 35 points, the Cardinal rallied to tie the game, 64-64, with 4:54 left on a jumper by Scott Meinert.
Arizona’s Sean Elliott scored 23 points. Reveno and Whitsitt each had 17 points for Stanford.
Washington 81, Oregon 74--Washington forward Phil Zevenbergen scored 6 of his 19 points in overtime as the Huskies defeated the Ducks at Seattle.
Zevenbergen made two foul shots with 57 seconds remaining in regulation time and the Huskies (15-13, 9-8) tied the score, 70-70.
Keith Balderston of Oregon (14-12, 8-9) missed a free throw with 15 seconds to go, and the game went into overtime.
California 71, Arizona State 65--Dave Butler sank a school-record 20 of 24 free throws and scored 26 points to lead the Bears (17-12, 10-7) past the Sun Devils (10-15, 6-11).
Washington State 73, Oregon State 63--The Cougars (9-17, 5-12) surprised the Beavers (18-8, 10-7), who lost their third straight game, at Pullman, Wash. Oregon State fell into a third-place tie with Cal.
