NHL Roundup : Red Wings Down Canucks, 5-4, to Extend Norris Lead

Gerard Gallant had a goal and two assists, and Dave Barr scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period Thursday night to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Detroit.

The victory gave the Red Wings a four-point lead over second place Minnesota in the Norris Division.

Barr’s 35-footer at 1:30 of the final period broke a 2-2 tie, and Gallant made it 4-2 on a power-play goal at 5:21.

Vancouver’s Tony Tanti scored his second goal of the game at 7:14, but Brent Ashton scored for Detroit with 33 seconds left to make it 5-3. Garth Butcher scored for Vancouver 14 seconds later.

Boston 6, Quebec 2--Steve Kasper had a goal and three assists as the Bruins beat the Nordiques at Boston in a game spiced by a brawl, nine player ejections and 231 penalty minutes.

The brawl broke out at 9:05 of the second period when Quebec’s Dale Hunter tangled with Boston’s Ken Linseman. The Bruins’ Bob Sweeney led the charge off the bench, and all the players on both teams, including goalies Bill Ranford of the Bruins and Mario Gosselin of the Nordiques, squared off.

There were 10 game-misconduct penalties, two on Quebec’s Gord Donnelly; 11 fighting majors, and six minor penalties, giving the Bruins 96 minutes and Quebec 71. Six Bruins and three Nordiques were ejected.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Pittsburgh 4--Pat LaFontaine and Mike Bossy scored second-period goals that led the Islanders past the Penguins at Uniondale, N.Y.

The Islanders’ have a 12-0-1 record at home against Pittsburgh since the 1983-84 season. The last time the Penguins won at Nassau Coliseum was Nov. 12, 1983.

Mario Lemieux had his 40th goal and an assist for the Penguins.

Calgary 4, Philadelphia 3--Lanny McDonald scored at 14:36 of the final period, and the Flames beat the Flyers at Calgary for their eighth victory in nine games.

The Flames trailed, 3-2, entering the final period, but Mike Bullard’s second goal of the game tied it.

Buffalo 4, St. Louis 3--Wilf Paiement’s third goal of the game at 5:11 of the final period lifted the Sabres over the Blues at Buffalo.

Paiement gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead with at 1:32 of the third period, but the Blues’ Tim Bothwell tied the score a minute later.
