Purdue had just taken down Big Ten leader Indiana, but Coach Gene Keady wasn’t satisfied.

Troy Lewis scored 18 points as the sixth-ranked Boilermakers defeated the third-ranked Hoosiers, 75-64, Thursday night at West Lafayette, Ind. The victory left Purdue (22-3 overall, 13-2 in the Big Ten) a half-game behind the Hoosiers (23-3, 14-2).

“We’re still climbing the ladder, playing for the (conference) championship,” Keady said after his team snapped the Hoosiers’ nine-game winning streak. “That’s just one more rung.

“In the first half, we wanted to rebound with them. In the second half, we wanted to go at them and get them in foul trouble. Those were our objectives, and we accomplished them.”

The Hoosiers had seven free throws in an 11-2 spurt to pull within 51-50 on a field goal by Joe Hillman.

The Hoosiers again closed within 53-52 before Lewis’ three-pointer halted the comeback for good. The Boilermakers’ lead wasn’t safe, however, until after they made 9 of 11 free throws down the stretch.
